Let’s start at the very beginning…

Let’s start at the very beginning…

…A very good place to start! (Julie Andrews, anyone?) This is my first-ever post in my first-ever blog. After six months of Covid quarantine, I know I’m not the only one turning more and more to their computers for creative outlet and connection. And since the countless hours of binge-watching, compulsive knitting, and adventurous baking have begun to lose their appeal, I’m attempting a new activity here.

For those of you who are only meeting me now (Nice to meet you!), I’m a native New Yorker who has spent the majority of her life in the pursuit of creative expression. From church and school choir to soap opera appearances to musical theater tours to jazz gigs in restaurants, I’ve had an unpredictable and usually pretty exciting journey thus far and I don’t plan on stopping now. BUT- yes, you could tell that big ol’ “but” was coming, couldn’t you?- something shifted this year. When Covid came through our country and shut us in our homes as businesses around us shut down as well, I got a lot of time to be at home with my thoughts. (And with my wonderful new husband and our sweet, sweet dog. More on them in later posts!) I began to realize that while I loved my experiences of being an artist, I didn’t always love the pursuit of them in the context of a career. And something else I grew to realize I loved almost as much was…the outdoors. While we are crazy lucky to have found that unicorn apartment in Brooklyn with a shockingly wild patch of backyard, I knew that capital-N Nature has been calling me for quite a long time. I was just so filled with the sounds of sirens, horns, and angry pedestrians to hear it. So after a conversation with my husband about our vision for our future, we pretty quickly realized that we didn’t “need” to be in the city anymore and were both practically itching to get out.

Which brings me to where we are now: in the process of transitioning our little family out of the city and to a real house somewhere upstate NY or in Vermont or Massachusetts. If we’re lucky and can strike that balance between being determined and being patient, then we’ll end up with what’s become our new dream: a farmhouse, some woods, a barn or two, and…dare I hope…goats?
